What is Terraria?

in General

Terraria is a recently released ‘indie’ game which has been rapidly gaining popularity in the gaming world. It was released Monday, May 16th 2011 on Steam with no official marketing campaign or build up besides a tweet from Minecraft creator notch. Despite the minimal marketing Terraria sold over 50,000 copies on the first day alone at $9.99 a piece.

The majority of the early reviews of Terraria compare it heavily to the popular indie game Minecraft, even going so far as to call it a “2D Minecraft”. In reality however, there is so much more to it than that would suggest.

Terraria takes some of the best elements of Minecraft and adds more of everything, including ores, weapons, monsters, etc. The aspect in which Terraria excels far beyond Minecraft is combat and the dizzying array of gear and accessories you are able to craft and find. The game focuses on mining, crafting, randomly generated levels, lightsabers, jet boots, and bosses to fight.

The multiplayer is where this game really comes to life, on a server with up to eight friends you all can explore, adventure and build together. The great part is that your character and all your items transfer across servers, even between multiplayer and singleplayer worlds.

If one were to make the Minecraft comparison you can see immediately that Terraria, although featuring one less dimension, contains so much more depth, both geologically and gameplay wise. Like Minecraft the worlds are randomly generated, unlike Minecraft the worlds in Terraria are limited in size and (for now) come in three flavours (Small, Medium, and Large). Enemies emerge at night but are present at all times both above and below ground.

Should you not be the digging/building type you can adventure around both in massive cavern systems and in rare above ground temples. Beware though that you should not venture too far too soon, or else it may be the end of you.

Although Terraria is already rich in crazy and cool features the developers have a lot of post-launch plans, including PvP, pets, and more.

“If one was to” should be “If one were to” (5th paragraph)– grammar error
